How to Remove Your iCloud Account from Your iPhone

So you're ready to move on from your iPhone - whether you're selling it, trading it in or passing it on to someone else. You've backed it up, you're good to go, but there's one more important step before you hand it over: Removing your iCloud account.

Leaving your iCloud account on a device means the next person will not be able to set it up properly. It also keeps your Apple ID linked to that phone, which is something you definitely don't want. The good news is it only takes a minute and once it's done, the device is completely clear and ready for its next owner.

Before you start, make sure you have backed up your iPhone first. Signing out of iCloud will remove iCloud data from the device, so a backup ensures nothing is lost. If you haven't backed up yet, see our guide here.

Step 1 - Open Settings
Tap the Settings app on your home screen - the grey icon with cogs.

Step 2 - Tap your name
At the very top of the Settings menu you will see your name. Tap it to open your Apple Account.

Step 3 - Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out
Scroll all the way down the page. You will see Sign Out written in red at the bottom - tap it.

Step 4 - Enter your Apple ID password
You will be asked to enter your Apple ID password. Type it in and tap Turn Off to continue.

Step 5 - Choose what to keep on the device
Your iPhone will ask if you want to keep a copy of any data locally such as contacts or calendar. Since you are passing the device on, switch all toggles off, then tap Sign Out.

Step 6 - Confirm sign out
A final confirmation message will appear - tap Sign Out one more time to confirm.

Step 7 - Done
Your iCloud account has been removed. The iPhone will restart and return to the setup screen, ready for its next owner.
